Moong dal Kheer / Parippu payasam ; Hang over of Onam n Cute Triple Awards :-)

At last Onam got over very soon and we actually celebrated it yesterday with a pot luck party with friends. Each of us prepared and garnished the banana leaves with the same enthusiasm as in Kerala.I prepared the pullissery and parippu payasam.Although its a familiar recipe to many but parippu payasam, ada pradhaman , paal payasam are the main dessert served in the banquet lunch in Onam.We had both paal payasam and parippu payasam in our sadya. So ,friends enjoy this yummy payasam recipe with me.

Ingredients
split moong dal / cherupayar parippu - 1kg
jaggery - 1.3kg
coconut milk thick - 4cups
coconut milk thin -2 cups
raisins - 1/2 cup
cashew nuts - 1 cup
cardamom powder  - 4tsp
dry ginger powder - 2 tsp
cumin powder -1 tsp
ghee 5 tsp

Method
  • Dry roast the split moong dal in a kadai for 5-6 minutes till a light brown colour appears or a nice aroma comes out.
  • Melt the jaggery in 1 1/2 cups of water by warming it up and sieve for the impurities.
  • Wash the moong dal and put it in a pressure cooker with adequate water ,cook it till 2 whistles.( Note the quantity your pressure cooker can hold)
  • After releasing pressure from cooker, add the jaggery 3/4 th and give a quick stir.Cook with the jaggery till the dal absorbs the sweetness and the water is slightly dried up.Keep it on low- medium flame and continous stirring is required.Check the sweetness and then add the remaining jaggery if required as per your tolerance.
  • Add the thin coconut milk and cook for another 10 minutes till the payasam thickens.
  • In the other burner, place a pan and pour ghee in it.Fry the raisins and cashews and add 3/4 thto the boiling payasam.
  • Add the dry ginger powder, cardamom powder, cumin powder. Keep stirring.
  • Lower the flame when the consistency is thick and then add the thick cocnut milk .
  • Put off the flame and garnish with left over cashews and raisins.
Servings 25 bowls

TIPS
- If you are preparing a smaller quantity ,adjust the ratio of dal n jaggery accordingly
