Thattukada Chicken Fry | Street food stall Chicken Fry (Spicy- Tangy combo) | Thattukada Style Kozhi Fry

Thattukadas are the local street food stalls  in Kerala where you find a big rush of people in the evenings and is celebrated. Its like Juhu chaupati in Mumbai. In Kerala, its mainly parottas, dosas, bolied eggs, chicken fries, tapiocca n fish curry prepared.Everyone finds it easier to buy these meals from the vendors preparing hot meals once you reach the bus stop after office or just outside your office gate. And believe me,the taste is exotic and you will definitely buy it next time too. However, they cannot be compared with  the hygiene and nutrition part of the home made cooked meal , Isn't it??(updated new pics:))

The other day one of my friend saw this recipe in one of the TV shows and she jotted down the recipe. She immediately tried it as the looks was irresistible and it was a lip smacking one.She then told me the recipe and I too felt to try it when she listed out the ingredients.Very soon ,I have big a fan of Thattukada chicken fry. There are peppercorns, green chillies, and chilly powder to spice it up.The chicken is first cooked in the marinated masala and then deep fried in Thattukada. But I prefer avoiding excess oil and hence I used a non stick pan  and shallow fried. Each one of you might have wondered the magic spices of thattukada if you have ever tasted it.Yes Frenz, now you can definitely prepare this recipe sitting at home with an extra effort n simple ingredients !!!

Chicken - thigh pieces or drumstick 6 pieces

to marinate
peppercorns 3tsp
cinnamon 1'' stick
cloves - 5
chilly powder 1 tsp
green chillies - 4 (use as per your level of spice buds)
ginger 1 '' piece
garlic 3 pods or 1 1/2 tsp paste
soy sauce 1 tsp (to give the blackish colour)
vinegar 1 tsp or lime juice 1 1/2 tsp (I used lime)

To garnish
onion 1 big sliced (to garnish on top
curry leaves
oil 5 tsp (preferably coconut oil ,if you wish to have the real Thattukada taste)

  • Warm the peppercorn ,cinnamon , cloves for 5 minutes in a  dry pan.Add the chilly powder after putting off the flame, check not to burn it up.
  • Grind the warmed spices, to a smooth paste and then the garlic, ginger and green chillies by adding water to fine paste.
  • Add salt ,soy sauce, and vinegar. (or lime juice) to the mix.
  • Apply the mix to the washed chicken pieces liberally ,marinate for 1 hour.(If ure using the drumstick, using a knife cut wedges so that masala can seep through the chicken)
  • Place a cooker or a thick based bottomed kadai, put the chicken pieces with masala  without oil.
  • Put it on low flame, and cook it covered.
  • Cook for 15minutes,and till the gravy dries up ,sticks to the  chicken pieces.

cooked with masala(old pic with thighs)

  • Heat oil in a non stick pan,add each pieces to the oil.
  • Fry both sides and place it on a paper towel.
  • Add the sliced onion, curry leaves ;fry the onion till light brown and add to the chicken pieces.
Servings 6 pieces
